Where There Is No Faith There Is No Obedience
Print PDF

Searching the number of times these words were found in KJV caused me to think about how faith and obedience were intertwined.

 obedience-12(NT)

Obedient-16 8(OT) 8(NT)

Obey-66  41(OT) 25(NT)

Faith -200 2(OT) 198(NT)

The two Old Testament books that contained faith are:

Deuteronomy 32:20 And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith

NLT(New Living Translation) -  He said, I will abandon them; I will see to their end! For they are a twisted generation, children without integrity.

Habakkuk 2:4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just
shall live by his faith.

NLT -  Look at the proud! They trust in themselves, and their lives are crooked, but the righteous will live by their faith.

Proverbs in OT is a good Book to read for righteous is used many times

Although the Old Testament does not come out and say Faith, we know that what
the characters that are listed in Hebrew, did was by faith

What is the definition of faith and obedience

faith

belief and trust in and loyalty to God <a people who are known for their strong and steadfast faith> Synonyms devotion, piety, religion

Related Words devoutness, piousness, religiousness; adoration, reverence, veneration, worship

Heb 11:1 –Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen

Or broken down by definition of the words:

Present time faith is the crucial element of things not grasped or understood by the senses, the proof of what we desire for

NLT -  Hebrews 11:1 What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope
for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see

Amplified reads “Faith perceives as real fact what is not revealed(made known) to
 the senses

obedience

a bending to the authority or control of another <the drill sergeant demanded
complete and unquestioning obedience from the recruits>

Synonyms compliance, conformity, observance, submission, subordination

Related Words acquiescence, agreeability, amenability; docility, submissiveness; capitulation, surrender, yielding; servility, slavishness, subservience; inhibition, repression, restraint, suppression; control, discipline, order

Heb 11 tells about people of faith in the Bible

Heb 11:6 states But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh
to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently
 seek him.

The people we are about to talk about had faith, belief and obedience which pleased God and each scripture begins with the words “By Faith”

Heb 11:4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and
by it he being dead yet speaketh.

NLT  It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain
did. Abel's offering gave evidence that he was a
righteous man, and God showed
his approval of his gifts. Although Abel is long dead, he still speaks to us by
 his example of
faith.

Genesis 4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

Abel was obedient and Cain was not because he didn’t bring the best.

Cain brought something while Abel brought the best.

Heb 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

NLT- It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying—"he disappeared, because God took him."* For before he was taken up, he was known
as a person who pleased God.

Genesis 5:24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

NLT- walking in close fellowship with God. Then one day he disappeared, because God took him

Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the
world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

NLT It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. By his faith Noah condemned the rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith

Genesis 6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

Genesis 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for
the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with
 the earth.

Genesis 6:22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so
did
he
.

Genesis 7:1 And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.

Genesis 7:5 And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him

Heb 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

NLT- It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going.

Heb 11:9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

NLT- And even when he reached the land God promised him, he lived there by

faith—for he was like a foreigner, living in tents. And so did Isaac(his son)
and Jacob(Isaac’s son), who inherited the same promise

Heb 11:10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and make
r is God.

NLT Abraham was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, a
city designed and built by God

Abram and Sarai were given new names that went along with the covenant made between God and Abram:

Genesis 17:5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram(exalted father), but
thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

Genesis 17:9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.

Genesis 17:15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai(my princes) thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah(noble woman)(would be remembered)  shall her name be.

Heb 11:11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and
was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful
who had promised.

NLT It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child, though she was barren and was too old. She believed that God would keep his promise. (ninety years old)

Heb 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

NLT All these people died still believing what God had promised them. They did not receive what was promised, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed it.
They agreed that they were foreigners and nomads here on earth.

What if there is no belief and obedience?

I John 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 3:8 He that committeth sin is
of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 3:9 Whosoever is born
of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin,
because he is born of God. 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he
that loveth not his brother

Satan would have people believe that their actions or how they live, has no bearings on their salvation. (lie, cheat, steal, live a life of immorality, etc)
John is telling us  that the one who practices righteousness is righteous....the one who does not...is following the devil

Romans 6:16 Don’t you realize that whatever you choose to obey becomes your master? You can choose sin, which leads to death or you can choose to obey God and receive his approval.

NLT- Don't you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.

If you are not living in righteousness, you are following the devil

John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words(be obedient): and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and
make our abode with him. 14:24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings:
and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments(be obedient), ye shall abide in my love;
even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love

John 8:28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man,
the
n shall ye know that I am he, and that
I do nothing of myself; but as my
Father
hath taught me, I speak these things.

Jesus tells us that he kept his Father’s commandments, so he didn’t do what he wanted, he did as his Father instructed. We need to do the same. If we believe the Word of God is true, there should be no hesitation in obeying.

James 2: They that lack faith cannot be holy; and they that have true faith, their
faith
will work by love. John 15;10

James 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only
James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is
dead also.

Works without faith are dead, and so cannot please God. For whatsoever is not of
faith is sin; and without or separate from Christ we can do nothing. Faith is the principle of all holy and acceptable obedience. Faith has a corresponding action

Finally, what statements can be made through this study?

Believing and behaving are inseparable
The devil wants us to think that what we believe has nothing to do with what we do or how we live our lives.

God is concerned with what we believe and how we behave.

True faith produces obedience....otherwise it is not saving faith at all!

Faith that follows God’s doctrine, not the devil’s.

Obedience, that is pleasing obedience, springs from faith. Faith is the unseen root; obedience is the seen fruit.
Ex: Abraham and Noah

The obedience of faith means also an absolute trust in God, though we may lack adequate information, yet what God tells us is enough for the time being. Abraham started to travel towards the land God would show him, but curiously enough, he did not know which land was it at the time he set out (Genesis 12:1). God gives enough light; as we progress along the way, he grants more light.

To obey in faith means maintaining the purity of the gospel even at the cost of experiencing resisting from church members and a feeling of loneliness.

Faith and obedience are joined together, because there is no true faith but what is followed with obedience, and no true obedience but what flows from faith.

Obedience which is not cheerfully rendered is not the obedience of the heart, and consequently is of little worth before God

If the man obeys because he has no opportunity of doing otherwise, and if, were he free, he would at once become a rebel—there is nothing in his obedience. When you are forced to obey, you only have resistance or rebellion and only do it because there is no way out.

The obedience of faith springs from a principle within, and not from compulsion without.

When your heart is spiritually renewed and you want to obey, it is an obedience
which becomes essential to the sanctified soul. Obedience is not relaxed in the time
of temptation, nor destroyed in the hour of losses and sufferings. True faith and obedience does not waver when you are going through trials and temptations.

Obedience and faith should be seen as that of a child

Obedience of love, not of terror; the obedience of faith, not of dread.

Children have faith and believe that their parents will take care of them in all things, they walk in obedience because of love, we need to do the same with Jesus.

Genuine faith in God creates a prompt obedience.

"By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed." There was an immediate response
to the command. Delayed obedience is disobedience

Obedience should be exact

You don’t wait

Obedience is practical

We don’t think about it, analyze it, discuss pros and cons, ask friend and family,
their opinion, we do it because of faith.

Faith produces a far-seeing obedience.

NLT -  Hebrews 11:1 What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope
for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see.

It would be a great company of people obeying God if what they were believing it happened instantly.

What Kind Of Life Is Lived Through FAITH AND OBEDIENCE?

We no longer control our lives, we turn them over to God

NLT- Jer 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.12 In those days when you pray, I will listen.13 If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.

God is the pilot of our vessel

When we appear the before the Lord, we do not want to hear as Pastor Tim Slaton of

Living Word Church says just “Well”. We want to hear :

Mat 25:23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou
into the joy of thy lord.

The obedience of faith creates a form of life which may be safely copied.

As parents, we wish so to live that our children may copy us to their lasting profit.

There should be no saying “Do as I say, not as I do”.

I want to leave this final thought with you.

Obedience comes through receiving, by faith, the Lord Jesus, who is the gift of God, and is made of God unto us sanctification.

We accept the Lord Jesus by faith, and he teaches us obedience, and creates it in us. The more of faith in him you have, the more of obedience to him will you manifest.

If you want these changes in your life, whether you are saved or unsaved, you can
start the change today by doing as Romans 10:9-10 says

Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt
believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Speak this prayer:

Lord we believe you are the son of God, we believe you died for our sins and raised from the grave. We believe you now sit in heaven on the righthand of God. Lord Jesus forgive us of all sins and indiscretions. Come into our lives and guide us so we can
live a life of love and obedience. Amen.

If you believe what was just prayed, I strongly suggest that you start reading the
Bible daily, so that his Words will become a part of you. Start attending a bible-teaching church, so that you are being continually encouraged through the teachings and the fellowship. Get a closer relationship with the Lord by praying and let not the words of unbelievers sway you from your faith.
